Episode 61 (September 14, 2021): The Writers Room - NFL Week 1; feat. House Enterprise Football Bloggers

BEERS: Will tries a very unique beer...so unique, it’s been named “America’s Best Light Lager” at this year’s World Beer Awards. Chair 2 is a Sons of Liberty creation, established in South Kingstown, but distributed nationally under its own brand...very similar to what SOL has done with Loyal Lemonade (which is DELICIOUS). Will has high praises for this new beer.  Jake reviews a North Shore selection from “Lynn, Lynn, the city of sin...you don’t come out the way you came in.”  Bent Water Brewing Company, a hidden gem in a warehouse right off the Lynnway, hits a home run with Sluice Juice, a New England IPA that has more hops than you knew existed.

BUSINESS: The iPhone 13 is coming!! Along with new Apple Watches and AirPods, Apple will release products at its world release events this week. When does phone technology hit its limit? Are we ever going to get the hologram keyboard that was promised to us like 10 years ago?!  How will the releases affect Apple stock; is now a good time to buy, or should you wait until after the event? Also, COVID tests are coming to brick and mortar stores; they’ll be in stores at around a 35% discount off what you can normally buy them for.  We debate; would you buy a covid test in a store if you were in a pinch?

BALLS: A long overdue show, but our “Writers’ Room” makes its debut!  We have our in-house writers James Mas, Sam Basel, Jordan Laube, and Eddy Szalan on the show to discuss their NFL teams’ performance in Week 1.  We break down the Eagles & Cardinals wins over the Falcons and Titans, and then discuss the losses...there was much sadness to go around between the Giants, Pats, and Jets.  We recap Sam Darnold’s revenge game with the Panthers, Corey Davis’ new addition to the Jets receiving core, and predictions for Mac Jones’s second game. We finish with giving our locks of the week, and the top fantasy performer for next week.

BEERS: This weekend, we both went south to the Mid-Atlantic region, and you know what that means: great beer. Will starts with a selection from Collusion Tap Works in York, Pennsylvania that has far reach into the beer scene. Despite being just a small brew pub in the middle of nowhere, Collusion boasts some of Pennsylvania's best beer.  Will has great things to say about Xerion Matrix, a New England style IPA for which he gives a high rating. Jake takes us to Star Hill Brewery, who just released its new beer garden in McLean, Virginia; it's a must-visit.

BUSINESS: The gambling show!! With Michael Jordan declaring that he’ll be investing in sports gambling data company SportRadar, we discuss if we’re about to see major sports stars venture into the betting world. Between ESPN’s $3 billion funding call on their sportsbook rights & licensing, to more sportsbooks popping up in venues across the nation, it’s a no-brainer.

BALLS: The Saturday’s & Seltzers podcast joins the show! (18:30) We have Kendra Middleton and Sarah Griffin on the show to discuss the brand they’ve built in just a few months.  Both self-proclaimed PLL experts, we discuss this past weekend’s Chaos-Whipsnakes Championship game - full disclosure, we recorded before the game, so you are definitely allowed to @OldTakesExposed us.  We break down what’s next for the game of lacrosse, content creation, and even some baseball.

Who doesn’t love The Wonton Don?! Our Episode 60 guest is the one and only Donnie Does, who made his name on traveling the world and discovering new cultures. You’ll recall that just a few months ago, Donnie put out a plea for someone to make him a “breakfast beer,” and this summer, we delivered plenty of fresh “Don’s Early Light” to the Barstool Sports HQ2. Donnie joins us for a quality hour of beer reviews, perspectives from his life as a content creator, and his upcoming trip to the Balkans. We also talk about his recent trip to Woonsocket, Rhode Island and all its “hidden gems.” We discuss how content creation has changed over the years, and what’s next for Donnie & the rest of the Barstool Sports crew.

We finish our show after Donnie’s interview with some rapid fire news. El Salvador is adopting Bitcoin as an official currency; is this brilliant or dumb? College football is back, and the NFL’s return is on the horizon; we make some moneyball picks for Week 1.

BEERS: What if we told you there were two successful breweries across the street from each other?  We travel to Beer on Earth for this live segment with founder Adam Henderson.  Beer on Earth isn’t the biggest brewery space in Rhode Island, but Adam shares his story of turning his passion into his career...much like our friends at Side Hustle in Episode 57.  As an award-winning homebrewer, Adam initially planned to start a brewery in Texas, but eventually Beer on Earth came to life in the Creative Capital. We discuss Beer on Earth going to market, where consumers can find their beer, and the competition landscape growing in Rhode Island & beyond.

BUSINESS: Chicago is putting Grubhub & DoorDash on blast. City officials are accusing DoorDash and Grubhub of harming the city’s restaurants with high fees and other deceptive practices. Can this hold up in court, and how will it affect the delivery business?  We discuss the reality that Uber and Lyft might be using our battery information to hike rates on us, and Apple CEO Tim Cook’s massive 10-year-anniversary payout.

BALLS: Rapid fire is back! Our Yankees go on a thirteen game win streak & are back in the playoff race, can they sustain it?  Michigan wins the Little League World Series, but is the bigger story the elite pitching rotation of South Dakota not making it to the finals? Former NFL defensive back Pacman Jones loses a fight to Bobby “Lights Out” Lang, and “Patty Ice” Cantlay beats Bryson Dechambeau in a 6-hole playoff after Bryson tells him to “please stop walking…”

BEERS: Will reviews a visit to a pop-up of a solid New England player in Widowmaker Brewing Company.  Their IPA’s can be found on the taps of most Boston-area beer bars and in the cans at most local liquor stores, so Will breaks down his experience getting Widowmaker’s flagship Blue Comet straight from the source.  Jake’s trip to Texas a few weeks back meant loads of craft beer, and “The Temptress” by Lakewood Brewing Company lived up to expectations. Although a 9.1% milk stout doesn’t sound ideal in the Texas heat, Temptress poured smooth and refreshing, and even sat well before a night out on the town.

BUSINESS: If you’re on OnlyFans, chances are you’re there for the suggestive content...for now, anyway. The subscription-based app has decided to ban all “sexually explicit content” on their platforms. This will certainly be a crushing blow to content creators; OnlyFans paid out $5 billion to more than 1.5 million users in its 5 years of existence.  Will their 150 million + users take their preferences elsewhere?  We also discuss Amazon’s double-down effort to get into brick-and-mortar models, and Elon Musk’s scary humanoid AI robot that is “naturally friendly.” GTFOH with that.

BALLS: She’s crushing her baseball coverage on NBC Sports Bay Area, she’s the host of the “All A’s” podcast, and she’s on our shortlist of recurring guests!  Jess Kleinschmidt re-joins the show to catch up on what’s been a crazy baseball season so far. Of course, we take a deep-dive on Jess’ Bay Area teams, and how the Giants & A’s are climbing the ranks in their respective divisions. We discuss the rise of the Yankees, the Cubs selling off basically their entire roster, and how each frontrunner can fare up in the playoffs.

BEERS: Mike Palmieri and Lee Holyoak had unlikely paths into the beer world; Mike was an executive at AT&T, while Lee was a tennis pro at the Long Cove Club.  But their passion for good beer (and Lee’s homebrewing competition medals) brought them together to form Side Hustle Beer Company, and they set up shop in a popular area of Hilton Head Island.  Mike and Lee give us a glimpse into their founding, and how they turned their “side hustle” into full-time jobs.  We discuss opening & scaling a brewery, getting product into people’s hands, and what they want their guests to experience when they have a Side Hustle beer.

BUSINESS: Famed investor Warren Buffett is back in the picture! Berkshire Hathaway has upped its stake in Kroger, one of the nation’s most profitable supermarket chains. Many follow Buffett’s investment advice simply based on his track record of wildly-profitable success; is this an omen of more lockdowns to come?  We make our bets on what industries are going to thrive for the remainder of 2021.

BALLS: The NFL is coming!  Preseason games are underway, and we discuss what they’re excited about. We also make our picks for the most exciting Hard Knocks hypothetical seasons.  The Field of Dreams game last week was nothing short of a wild hit, as the White Sox and Yankees ended in a walk-off home run followed by a firework show.  Should this be an annual event for the MLB?  We also discuss the NBA Summer League & recap the USA Basketball team’s big gold medal win at the Tokyo Olympics.

BEERS: Apponaug Brewing Company is re-defining what it means to be a brewery.  When Tamara McKenney founded Apponaug, she envisioned a place that would intertwine craft beer, community, and great food: as she calls it, the “tripod.”  When she hired Mike Webster as her head brewer - who made stops at Tree House and Fox Farm - and a head chef to design a menu from the ground up, her dream was in motion.  This segment is our first live interview of 2021; Will and Jake head down to Warwick to interview Tamara and Mike in person, enjoy some good beer, and top it off with their favorite - sweet potato poutine.  We discuss the founding and original vision of Apponaug, the evolution of the beer program, and what’s next for Rhode Island’s quickest-growing brewpub.

BUSINESS: Snapchat is back! The social media titan recently announced it has nearly 293 million daily active users, and reported its biggest growth quarter in four years (24% from previous quarter). Lockdowns lifting and more people traveling means more posts, more engagement, and more filters! What’s next for Snapchat, and why are they crushing it among the younger crowds?

BALLS: Tokyo 2020 (or 2021? Who knows) is underway! While Basketball's 7-point loss to France is making headlines, the US has 7 gold medals at the time we recorded this episode. What’s on tap for the US olympic teams, and who’s in line to get medals?  The guys rank the new additions to the olympic lineup this year - karate, surfing, sport climbing, and skateboarding.  We also react to the “Guardians” becoming the new name of the Cleveland baseball team, and give some light analysis on the 2021 NBA Draft this Thursday.

BEERS: Where else but Long Live?!  Will swung by the Providence favorite this weekend to try their newest collaboration, “DDH Sea Life,” made in partnership with South Shore-based Vitamin Sea Brewing.  With the engagement of so many users on Untappd and beyond, the guys turn this into a discussion on marketing for breweries - how can beer brands use social media to get more customers coming back?  Jake reviews Brick Alley House Ale, from the notorious Brick Alley Pub in Newport.  A good selection for a humid summer day is awarded the first “situational” ranking in podcast history (we think).

BUSINESS (17:17): When David Woodley graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in Economics, he never would’ve imagined the way his career turned. From selling advertisements at popular satire outlet The Onion, to becoming a partner and advisor to large hospitality and podcasting mediums, David has picked up a wealth of knowledge over his journey in corporate America. It’s now led him to become the Chief Content & Revenue Officer at Playmaker: a sports media, events, and merchandise company with a 12+ million-follower social footprint.  David discusses why Playmaker has been able to garner a titanic following on social media, why their content resonates so well with their followers, and what’s next for the brand.  David also breaks down Playmaker’s endeavors in athlete representation: from Carlos Boozer and Nate Robinson, to college athletes getting a piece of the pie, there’s much to be excited about from Playmaker.

BALLS: Since we last recorded, the Milwaukee Bucks are 3-0!  Are we their X-factor?  We predict the results of Game 6 (and potentially Game 7), and break down the Suns’ chances of pulling off a solid two-game comeback.  The NHL Expansion Draft takes place on Wednesday, which means the Seattle Kraken will officially have a roster. Is the current format of the draft causing more harm than it is good?  Finally, Red Sox left fielder Alex Verdugo was plunked with a ball thrown from the crowd mid-game; the fan that hit him has been banned for life at all 30 MLB stadiums. Is this an overreaction or a fitting punishment?
