Welcome to the episode 51 of Drinking Points! This week we introduce a new theme song and a new outlook on the show. We discuss growing as a podcast, what we’ve been up to this week and...our recently played albums on Spotify! Troy’s dad gets a thorough mention as we talk about Father’s Day, his funny sayings, and our distaste for the book “Sh*t My Dad Says”. We hope you enjoy the new Drinking Points, it’s just a podcast!

Here it is: Minisode #6. As you’ve probably noticed, we’ve been on a bit of a hiatus for the last couple of months. It’s a break that we needed, but that we couldn’t wait to end. This minisode is a PSA about mental health and mental illness.

“While we were away, I was battling my own mind. I’ve suffered from anxiety, panic, and depression since my early teens but I always found ways to cope. Recently, my coping mechanisms became unhealthy and destructive. My mental illness penetrated every facet of my life, from the time I got out of bed until I would lay my head on the pillow at the end of the night. I wasn’t sleeping, eating, or bathing by the time I really cracked. I had to make a few trips to the hospital, experiment with different medications, and begin therapy to get where I am currently. Honesty will be an important part of my healing process, so Haley and I decided that this minisode would be a great way to update everyone listening on what’s been going on and what you can expect in the future.”  -Troy

Next week we’ll have a new full length episode and we’ll be picking up right where we left off. The summer is almost here, and the nice weather has already arrived. It’s time for a beer on one of the many patios around town! There’s plenty of history to reveal and a TON of new beers coming out throughout the summer to fuel the podcast! Thanks for your continued support and understanding. Cheers!

Everybody stand up, stretch, and grab yourself another beer because we’re talking about the ballpark this week. We chat a little bit about the Buffalo Bisons’ new field sponsor, Bisons mascots (animate and inanimate), and a man at the ballpark that’s even more recognizable than a mascot. Resurgence Brewing, Big Ditch Brewing, and Community Beer Works team up for a third time to release the Buffalo Brewers Series of beers. This one has us excited for the baseball season, now get back to your seats and press play!

We're back baby! Troy's been under the weather for about a week and a half, which we're not only going to use as an excuse for our absence, but we're also using it for the theme of this episode! We go over the history of Buffalo's largest hospital, which played an important role in the area during the 1918 flu pandemic. To go along with our theme of weird stuff that microorganisms do, we're drinking Big Ditch's Bidwell Wild Ale! Now wash your hands and listen up!

Showing some love during the week of Valentine’s Day. As you may know we really dig talking about the Erie Canal, but Episode 48 is all about the Love Canal. We talk about how a city planned to be a clean, futuristic utopia powered by hydroelectricity lead to the creation of a toxic waste dump: the plan for a “Model City” really was a model on how not to dispose of toxic waste, and once you do dispose of that toxic waste, how not to handle a national emergency fueled by sickness, death, and birth defects. This all happened along the Niagara Escarpment, which also happens to be where our drink this week is from. We discuss yet another story of pollution in WNY while sipping Riesling from Freedom Run Winery. Learn about the history of the Niagara Region as well as all of New York State’s impact on winemaking.

This week we felt that after recording last time with Vinylly Friday, we needed to take a break from the brews--of beer, that is--because in this episode we're drinking Barrel + Brine kombucha! We discuss the somewhat disturbing way that kombucha is made as well as the tons of other fermented goodies that Barrel + Brine has to offer! And on the historical end, Haley gets serious about WNY's Eeriest body of water.

Cheers! Go have something fermented, and call your "Mother"!

This week, we were joined by our buds Tim and Eddie from Vinylly Friday for a regular ol' collab-a-thon! This time around, we let them pick the brewery: we drank Main Course DDHIPA by Belt Line Brewery & Kitchen, a brand-new brewery and taproom that just opened down in the Hydraulic neighborhood. And as things generally go around here, the brewery decided the history for this episode...so more trains! Buckle up: we're all quite inebriated for this one (good thing we took the train!)

And since it was a "collab-a-thon," there'll be a new episode of Vinylly Friday featuring us coming up soon! We'll keep ya'll updated on when it does, but until then, listen to the rest of their episodes--they're some pretty funny dudes who talk about a wide range of music!

It’s our One Beer Anniversary Episode!

An entire year has passed since we started Drinking Points! This week we go back to Episode 1, and reminisce about (read: completely rip on) our Pilot Episode too! We were welcomed back to record at Big Ditch Brewing Company yet again, which coincides with all of our Erie Canal chit chat on the first episode. Episode 45 is all about poking fun at our past selves and expanding on ideas we had a year ago!

Cheers!

Sometimes episodes are written around a historical event, sometimes they’re written with a certain beer in mind. Other times, a brewery releases a beer about winter weather with 7.7% ABV and 77 IBUs and we’re left with no choice but to do a Blizzard of 77 episode. So crack a beer and bundle up, because it’s a cold one out there!

We're back (again!) And this time, in a brand new space: we've moved to South Buffalo! Obviously we're super excited, so allow us to gush about our new apartment and the building we live in now and its historical significance in the city. Now as this is both our first experience "leaving the nest," we thought we would drink a beer that (loosely) fits the theme of moving out of your parent's place.

Hey, uh... sorry we've been gone for a minute. We promise we were thinking about all of you the whole time and feeling really guilty about it. And we were drinking local beer.

Anyway, in this episode we're kickin' it old school: Old First Ward-school. We finally made it down to Gene McCarthy's/OFW Brewing and it was everything we could have ever hoped for. We gush more about the First Ward neighborhood (we've done this before, re: previous episodes) and plans for renewal of this historic neighborhood.

(About halfway though it starts raining like crazy outside. Enjoy the ambiance I guess?)

As the snow starts to fall, November begins to pass us by, and the last thursday of the month approaches, it begs the question: WERE THERE EXTRATERRESTRIALS PRESENT AT THE FIRST THANKSGIVING?!

While there’s no record of aliens NOT attending the first feast, there ARE records of UFO sightings in New York State. We skim through YouTube videos of UFOs caught on local newscasts, records of sightings in our neighborhoods on nuforc.org, and a controversial visit the Men in Black took to Niagara Falls.

Does this episode seem too out there for you?

We also discuss the possible, and very real explanations behind sightings all over the U.S. like Top Secret programs operated out of Groom Lake salt flats [Area 51], and the companies behind them. While Lockheed Martin led those operations in the Nevada desert, they also continue research today at a location in Niagara Falls, New York. You may also hear the Imperial March play in your head when we talk about Northrop Grumman and their push to make space weapons and Star Wars a reality.

Sit back and listen as we cover all this and more while sipping on two intergalactic themed beers. How could we properly walk the line of conspiracies without getting spaced out on DIPAs by two of our favorite breweries. First we take on Radio the Mothership by Collective Arts, which is lighter in color than our second beer, but brings more effervescence and packs a boozier punch. Next we drink Space Kitty by Rohrbach Brewing Company which has a bronze hue, and balances the bitterness with some much welcomed malt.

Alright, put on your tinfoil hats, get in your cardboard box rocket ship, and have a listen!

Cheers!

This episode we throw things back and go back to our roots: this is our Buffalo Brewing Company episode! Surprisingly, we've only just had our first experience drinking with them in the last month! They're a two-year-old brewery that carries the same namesake as a brewery from a century ago, making beers reminiscent of yesteryears.

Why are we posting a minisode this week? Well, we're still hungover (physically, emotionally, and spiritually) from Halloween. There isn't really a theme to this one, if we're being honest... but we do talk a lot about cats, adorable rodents, Troy's blog, beer, and a bunch of other Schlitz.

Throughout the nineteen-forties, fifties, and sixties, Buffalo’s theatre district was fortunate enough to host some of the biggest names in entertainment. On any given date, Shea’s Buffalo and the Town Casino across the street were sure to be home to an evening show, leading to late night after-parties that lasted until morning. Today, you can still catch a performance at Shea’s or a concert at Town Ballroom, and its said that while visiting both you can still hear the post-show festivities, or even be approached by the late Michael Shea.

While recording this week, Haley drinks a beer by Buffalo’s own Pressure Drop Brewing. With hints of cinnamon and toasted flavors, ‘Dog Birthday Party’ Graham Cracker Stout is warm and welcome on the palate during this cooler weather. Then, Pressure Drop sent in a special guest before his big release; Ol’ Green Eyes himself, ‘Dank Sinatra’. Although the opaque glass of beer you get from this one is on point with what we think of as a New England Style, the flavors are a true East Coast meets West Coast mashup. With a sweet, citrusy, almost herbaceous front end, Dank Sinatra finishes his set dank, earthy, and just a little bitter.

As the third of four Halloween episodes goes live we think it’s safe to say that we’ve gone from spooky, to creepy, to downright scary with this episode. What makes it cross the line to ‘scary’? The fact that these are the stories of the real monsters that have terrorized our communities: Serial Killers. While Robert Kleason wasn’t a serial killer by definition (his kill count isn’t sufficient enough), he was once rumored to be the inspiration for the Texas Chainsaw Massacre films. Then we discuss the man who spent years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit, while the real ‘Bike Path Rapist’ was free to kill again.

The historical content may be dark, but we kept the drinks light and sweet. This week is a cider episode, and we tried a few varieties! Throughout the show we sip Leonard Oakes “Steampunk Cider” and review two ciders by Blackbird Cider Works that we tried before recording. Don’t think there’s something for your specific tastes in the cider world? Think again!

This week we discuss the true horror behind a popular urban legend in Angola NY, the curse of an Egyptian king cast in Niagara Falls, and we list off a number of “coincidences” that have happened along the Great Gorge Route near Devil’s Hole. Ready or not, we drink another pumpkin beer...well it’s more of a coffee beer by Fifth Frame Brewing Co. with a seasonal twist. Then we try our first Rye IPA, by Barrier Brewing. So do you want to find out where to go and possibly experience a good spook? Want to hear the funny crap other people say about the beers we drink? Then quit reading and get listening!

Have you ever wondered why things make you creeped out? To kick off the show, Haley gives a run down on exactly why we find things creepy, and why she likes being spooked, while Troy reaffirms that when it comes to scary stuff, he’s a little baby b***h.

That being said, welcome to the first of four Halloween episodes! With New York having the history that it does, and with all the available seasonal beers, it was obvious to us that all that spookiness couldn’t be fit into a single show! This week, learn about NYS as the birthplace of Spiritualism, and two sisters that became famous for pranking their mother, and in turn, started an entire religion. And since it’s week one, you know some pumpkin beers were consumed! But whether you love em or hate em, we let you know where to send your thank you cards or your hate mail!

As always, drink responsibly, drink local, oh and stay creepy!

This week we're revisiting Rochester! Haley's already feeling a little spooky so she'll be talking exclusively about Mount Hope cemetery and its most famous/interesting residents (no offense to the rest of the people buried there...) Also we discuss a newer brewery in the area, as well as another Rochester brewery that makes a beer based off of a well-known mass-produced beer.

Hey there! This is a special pre-recorded episode that we recorded with the guys from What the Hops at Big Ditch during the Packet re-release! Regrettably, there isn't a ton of history in this episode, and that's mainly because we were going with What the Hops' style of podcasting: just shooting the shit. We hope you enjoy, and we'll be back next week with your regularly-scheduled history podcast (brewed for your enjoyment.) Happy Buffalo Beer Week! #COLLABORATION

This week we're celebrating Buffalo's music scene to get in the spirit of Music is Art, the nonprofit started by a member of one famous Buffalo-based band. When you think of music and entertainment in Buffalo, you can't not think about the Theatre District, or its centerpiece: Shea's Performing Arts Center. Shea was a super busy guy who seriously LOVED entertainment. If you're not driving, take a sip for every theatre of his that Haley mentions in this episode.

TL;DL: Everything burns down *fire emoji*. Also we don't know how to pronounce vaudeville.

It's our thirtieth episode! You know what they say: 30 is the new 20! So for this, our thirtieth episode, we've decided to make our own little "clip-isode" where we go over our last 29 episodes (and the minisodes) and bring up some stuff that's come up since the episode has come out. Haley does do a classic deep-dive into something historic (should we tell you what it is?) Alright fine, it's the Buffalo Central Terminal! We just won't tell you where it comes in. HA!

This episode's for anyone going back to school this week coming up: this is our University at Buffalo episode! (Probably one of many, because there's a ton of history behind the school.) Consider this our most general UB episode, because Haley goes over the founding of the school and how the two main campuses got their start. Troy does a deep-dive on Capen Hall and Haley talks about her UB experience back in good ol' 2014, for which we have a moment of silence for Yik Yak.

This episode is a little bit sloppier than our usual product--we blame recording at 10 pm and pre-gaming at New York Beer Project. Anyway, this is our official Frederick Law Olmsted episode! Olmsted played a huge role in making Buffalo a one-of-a-kind city; what he would call "the Best Planned City in the World." Haley discusses the three parks he designed for Buffalo and the vision he had for each of them--and the effect that the Buffalo expressway system has had on each of them. (You'll find out here that we have about as much passion about buildings as we do about parks.)

Expect our usual Drinking Points chatter: old buildings, influential individuals, and great beer. We give a little more information on what's behind the barrel aging process and we share every detail on our tasting sheet for this one. Cheers!

Here's a fun drinking game: take a drink every time the word "right" or "Wright" is said in this episode. (Actually, don't. That's not drinking responsibly.)

Well, if you know us, I'm sure you know by now this is our Frank Lloyd Wright episode! (Maybe the first of several, who knows.) In this episode we discuss one of Wright's most well-known designs, made for the man he called his best friend: Darwin D. Martin. In addition we talk about a few other Wright works in Buffalo, and we find out that Haley probably cares more about old buildings than people.

And an added bonus: we start a new Untappd segment, which has yet to be named, starring the beer of the episode; Frank by Community Beer Works!

In this minisode, we're celebrating 7/16! Does it count as a minisode if it's still 40 minutes long? We like to think so. But unlike our usual beer-drinking selves, we're celebrating by drinking local kombucha by Barrel and Brine (go ahead, call us hipsters.) Haley discusses the history of phone numbers and area codes, and Troy goes on a series of Buffalo-based tangents that he's been waiting forever to unleash. Thanks for listening!

In this episode, we go over our weekend road trip through Western New York and discuss the colorful history of a few towns that we passed through: one that is known as the "birthplace of WNY", another that was the birthplace of the author of the Pledge of Allegiance, and a town that has not one, but two, correctional facilities! Also, we bring back one of OUR favorite segments (we hope it's yours too): WHAT COULD'VE IT BEEN NAMED?

The purpose of this road trip was to find our "hoppy" place at Farm Sanctuary in Watkins Glen, NY, which was obviously amazing; but being in Watkins Glen, of course, means that we had to check out the local beer scene. Watkins Glen is the home of Rooster Fish Brewing, New York's first Farm Brewery, so we drank a flight (as one does) and also managed to find some of their beer to drink on the show. Although the episode states that Rooster Fish was NYS’s first Farm Brewery; another beer we drank today by Good Nature Brewing from Hamilton, NY says THEY’re the first Farm Brewery in the state. Which one of you is it?!

The third beer we drank was by Rogue Ales. Why are we drinking a beer from out of state on the show? Because not only is Rogue from one of the top three hop producing states in the US. But they’re also 100% in on #drinklocal! They’ve got their own farms where they grow a ton of ingredients for their beer; and we think that’s pretty cool!

So I guess all we can say now is that we hope you enjoy this random episode, and we hope you find YOUR hoppy place!

Beers drank (not counting our flight):

Blight Buster- Good Nature Brewing

6 Hop IPA- Rogue Ales

Hop Warrior Imperial IPA- RoosterFish Brewing

Ah, Canada and the U.S.A.

They gained their independence the same week in July (almost 100 years apart) and they’ve been friends since the very beginning right? WRONG!

*thunder crashes*

The year is 1812 and Congress declares war on Canada! Not really, they declared war on Great Britain who had control of Canada. Forts were built, destroyed, and rebuilt. The same went for entire cities! And it’s been so damn hot here that we thought, “Hey, let’s talk about the burning of Buffalo.”

Beer wise, we chat a bit about the oldest breweries of both the U.S. and Canada and we drink beers from four different breweries that we’re PRETTY SURE we haven’t mentioned on the show before! (Two American, two Canadian.)

So grab a beer, sit down, and have a listen eh! 🇺🇸 🇨🇦 🇬🇧

A building occupied by one of our favorite coffee spots has a lot of history behind it. Join us as we talk about how we love our local coffee scene as much as our local beer scene. In the spirit of our topic, we’re drinking a couple of different coffee-infused beers. In addition, we give you a little TMI about what coffee does to the body...we hope you're not too shy. In this episode we delve into a Buffalo historical figure who Haley has been super excited to talk about: Red Jacket! As expected, any talk involving post-European Native American history can get a little serious, but we promise it's not too much of a bummer! We even get a little spooky and discuss a possible Buffalo curse? And for the beer... well, that would be another curse of the Buffalo/Western New York area: we're drinking Genny Screamers. If you don't know what those are, you're gonna find out today!

And an extra tidbit: we talk about Resurgence's new can releases, specifically Peter B. Porter and Conehead IPA, which we're super pumped about!

(Sorry there's a lot of car/plane noises in the background. It was hot as a really hot thing so we had the windows open for the first half of the episode...then there's birds, which is a little less annoying)

This week, we stumbled upon an episode topic by accident (as we tend to do) and revisited Buffalo's Old First Ward at the Barrel Factory, home of one of Buffalo's newest breweries, Pressure Drop Brewing! This place is really awesome, and hits all of our "good place" vibes. They don't make barrels here anymore (yet?) but they do push out some serious beer, as well as spirits and kombucha. In addition, we touch on the growing trend of neighborhoods, such as the Old First Ward, going "micro-local," which we're obviously here for 100%.

This week, we're drinking a beer very close to our friends' hearts, the Walter's Jelly Donut by New York Beer Project! We hope this episode is a (donut) hole in one!

How do trains drink? They chug. Hop on the West Shore train with us this week as we talk about West Shore Brewing, a relatively new brewery in Clarence, NY! This brewery was suggested to us by a survey participant, and it did NOT disappoint! Our research this week took us into the Rare Books Room of the Central Library (how fancy!) Since we weren't able to drink West Shore Beers during our recording, we chose something else that seemed to fit the bill. All aboard!

Well...we're not sure how to say this lightly, but we're releasing this episode on a day where a lot of people celebrate a certain plant. (I guess that's a good way to put it lightly.) This plant shares a lot of similarities with another plant, which, if you enjoy drinking beer like we do, you know we're talking about hops! One of the major similarities is the prohibition of the substances that these plants are found in, and in this episode, we'll be talking in detail about the prohibition of alcohol! And since we're a Buffalo podcast, we'll of course talk a bit about Buffalo's role during the prohibition! So join us, and remember to drink responsibly, which means you've gotta drink local!

After 11 episodes, we decided to throw in a revisit and show some more love for Big Ditch Brewing Company. This week we cover a ton a Erie Canal history and a bunch of different Big Ditch brews! What can you expect from this weeks episode? Learn about the sources of many Big Ditch beer names, hear some Erie Canal fun facts that we left out of Episode 1, and find out which naysayer Dewitt Clinton called out on his s#!t talking! As an added bonus, enjoy learning some Canalese from Haley. Music: "Low Bridge" by the Rust Belt Brigade

Take me out to the brewery, take me out with the crowd, buy me some pretzels and a six pack, I don't care if I never get back... This week, we're celebrating the opening week of baseball by talking about a brewery located in the (supposed) birthplace of baseball--well, at the least--the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame: Cooperstown, NY! Everybody get your “fun” meters out because the fun level in this episode is off the charts, so much that this episode was almost labeled “The Fun Episode”. So why are we talking about the many amusement parks and attractions that have meant family fun for generations of Western New Yorkers? Take a listen to find out! Oh, you’re curious about what beer we’re featuring this week? We’re not coming right out and saying it, but Haley latched onto the name of the brew and it snowballed into this entire episode! Cheers! Sorry to disappoint--this episode is about the First Ward, NOT Old First Ward Brewing. (We'll get there!) Regardless, this is our St. Patrick's Day episode! So naturally, we're talking about the Irish impact on Buffalo, and the neighborhood where they set their roots. Also we're drinking Irish-style beers, so there's that. (And no, not green beer.) Are you Irish? Who cares! Everyone's Irish on St. Patrick's day.
