Another Western MA brewery that we seriously can’t get enough up. We hope this episode gives you more incentive to head west on your next beer trip. As always, support local and buy from the source when you can. Cheers!

Running Marathons and half marathons is not something the Brew Roots crew is familiar with, but our guest this week certainly is. Our new friend Geoffrey is the founder and brewer at ZēLUS.

Geoffrey started ZēLUS with a drive to deliver beers with all the great flavor of a traditional craft beer while keeping ABV’s low and nutrients high.

We know this episode got us motivated to start training for our next marathon.

The air is getting crisper and the temperatures are dropping here in New England. For the Brew Roots Crew it’s the perfect time to enjoy some amazing local Ciders.

So, we made our way to Lookout Farm in Natick, Massachusetts to talk about Cider and Beer with our new friends Rich (Sales Manager) and Aaron (Head Brewer).

We learned a lot about Lookout Farm's commitment to sustainability and how much of what they grow at the farm goes into their ciders, beers, and onsite restaurant.

It's harvest season so go to Lookout Farm, drink some Cider, eat some food at their new restaurant "The Lookout" and pick your own apples. You know Fall Stuff.

Similar to many home brewers, Neil Kade dreamed of having his own brewery one day. Although it’s not exactly the dream he expected, he’s now commercially brewing beer for New England.

We first heard of Neil and Gilded Skull Brewing after our friends the Mass Brew Bros. wrote this article in February 2019 and their follow up article released just a couple weeks ago.

In the article we found that not only was Neil trying to launch Gilded Skull Brewing but he was also diagnosed with a rare form of liver cancer and fighting for a future. Neil was quoted saying “all we wanted was normalcy, to start our family and build this little beer project into a brewery.”

Flash forward to the present, after successful surgery and a grueling 12 months of chemotherapy Neil is currently cancer free and he and his wife are expecting a child in a few weeks. On top of everything, Neil is in the middle of releasing his first beer, Gilded Empire, a 7.2% ABV New England IPA featuring Citra, Cashmere, and Lotus hops along with spelt and flaked oats. Make sure to get your hands on this beer with their convenient beer finder on their website http://gildedskullbrewing.com

This weeks episode was inspired by our friends The Mass Brew Bros‘s blog post What is the Future of the Massachusetts Craft Beer Industry, Post Pandemic: Local Brewers Weigh In. If you haven’t had a chance to read it please check it out!

The primary focus of this virtual round table discussion is to allow a platform for some of the blog posts contributors to discuss together life as a brewery now more than a month into the pandemic.

Topics range from how they have adapted to the current climate to their views outlooks on the current situation, and what the future might look like.

As the Mass Brew Bros put so eloquently: “We caution readers and listeners, however, not to draw too many conclusions on what other breweries may be experiencing, or the fate of the industry as a whole, based on this sampling. It’s simply a series of snapshots that reveal what some in the local industry are currently dealing with”.

Please make sure to continue to support all Mass Breweries and if you’re curious about our guest this week here are their websites which all list how to get your hands on some beer!

Everyone knows Allagash and brewers around here have a special fascination with them. Their beer is next level, they have a coolship, and they've been around for a long time and show no signs of disappearing. Allagash is the dream.

It was only a matter of time, and finding the right connection, before we were able to bring to you an episode featuring Allagash. Specifically we sat down with Jason, the Headbrewer at Allagash who has been there since, almost, the beginning. Starting out as a home brewer he's come a long way and helped to create some of the best beers there today.

Listen in as we discuss Jason's humble beginnings with Allagash and where it's all going in the future.

Cheers!

Anyone can call themselves an expert on beer. But when consumers want great beer they need help from a server who really knows beer flavors, styles, and service.

They also want to buy beer from a place that understands proper storage and serving so the beer they drink will taste the way it should. Too often great beer is harmed by improper handling and service practices.

In the wine world, the word "sommelier" designates those with proven expertise in selecting, acquiring and serving fine wine. At one time, some beer servers adopted the title "beer sommelier" to tie into the credibility of the wine world. But in the years since its founding, the Cicerone® Certification Program has become the industry standard for identifying those with significant knowledge and professional skills in beer sales and service.

The Cicerone Certification Program offers independent assessment and certification so that industry professionals—as well as consumers—can be sure of the knowledge and skills possessed by current and prospective beer servers.

Ever go to a brewery and ask yourself “whatever happened to black IPAs, Brown ales, etc?” Well that’s exactly what we did this week. Because seriously, there’s a lot of beer styles we love that we just can’t seem to find anymore.

Listen in this week as we discuss some of the “dead beers” that you just can’t find at the local packy store. Why are they gone? Where can you find them now? Will they ever come back? No one really knows, but this episode will at least make you feel in good company.

PJ was a guest on our first season so if you haven't heard that episode yet go back in the archives and check it out cause it's a good one. This episode is less about how the brewery started but what is going now at Navigation and the less sexy parts of brewing and owning a brewery. We talk about the beer community in Merrimack Valley, what's next for Navigation, and how PJ is leaving his mark on new up and coming breweries.

Please make sure to check out Navigation https://www.navigationbrewing.com/brewery and on social media! If you happen to be in the Lowell area, make sure to stop by the tap room and let them know we sent ya!

Herb Lindtveit

Earlier this week scrolling through our feeds on social media we read about the passing of Herb Lindtveit.

For those who do not know Herb.

He was more than the brewery facilities manager at Jack’s Abby; he was the keystone that held these walls together, an educator that never stopped sharing his knowledge and passion, and a family man that was loved by all, not just those related by blood. Herb leaves behind a wife and four children.

Since Herb’s passing we’ve seen countless posts honoring him and thanking him for his contributions to our beloved industry.

Despite never having the pleasure of meeting Herb directly, this loss hit us hard, we kept thinking how can we help?

Well we found out earlier in the week that Jack’s Abby is going to be brewing a beer in commemoration of Herb. At the request of the family, Jack’s Abby will be releasing a limited edition lager, In Herb We Trust.

All proceeds will be going directly to supporting the Lindtveit family.

Here’s the website to buy the beer: https://shop.jacksabby.com/collections/hats/products/in-herb-we-trust-memorial-beer

Jack’s Abby is throwing a Memorial Celebration on April 14th from 4pm-8pm at Springdale, where folks can pick up the beer that they pre-ordered:

The family has also set up a go fund me for additional support https://ca.gofundme.com/6x187vs.

Our Sincerest Condolences Go out to the Lindtveit Family and in Herb We Trust!

K. Sparks had become an emerging Hip Hop artist with well-received appearances on numerous outlets such as XXL, Boi-1da, 2dopeboyz, DJ Booth, okayplayer, Kevin Nottingham, HipHopDX, All HipHop, Nahright, Tune Core, and hundreds of others. He proceeded to release his single 'Watching Me' on Power 105 DJ/Radio Personality DJ Envy's Audio Up Rising album to well received acclaim. In addition he released his single 'Needs vs Wants' on Nick Cannons Wildstyle Champs Album that also received notable attention. He continued to make a name for himself performing at numerous venues, such as The Underground Showdown opening up for Joe Budden and Talib Kewli. And then The Brooklyn Hip Hop Festival featuring Kanye West, Kendrick Lamar, Q Tip, and MOP, as well as sharing the stage with the legendary Lords of The Underground.

Sound Engineer: Ryan Blaney

Ryan is a Sound Designer and Composer for Theater. He believe sound is a crucial part of the story telling process. Instead of seeing things that accentuate the story such as lights, costumes, scenery, and props, you hear it. As part of his designs he believes composing music is the best way of telling a story. Why grab something that someone has already written for a different purpose when you can create the sound palette from scratch in order to shape the story that the Director and the other story tellers want to tell.

The wait is over! We are finally revealing our new host!

But before we do, we have some sad news. Our beloved co-host Emily will be stepping away from the podcast. Emily has helped in countless ways bringing the podcast to the place it is today. Without Emily's contributions, Brew Roots as you know was not possible, and for that, we are forever grateful.

Luckily, for us, Emily will continue to contribute to the podcast for the foreseeable future.

As always, with bad news comes good news.

This week we announce our new host Erika Anderson! Erika coming on board was an extremely easy decision to make, as her resume speaks for itself. Not only is Erika an avid homebrewer, she manages a Beer and Wine Hobby Store, is a member of Pink Boots Society and is respected in the Massachusetts Beer Scene. So welcome Erika to the podcast!

Now on to the episode!

Matt sat down and shared a beer with Dane and Dagan co-owners at Liars Bench. The duo became friends quickly at college in New Hampshire and after graduation both Dane and Dagan settled on different coasts which unbeknownst to the duo laid the foundation of what became Liars Bench. Sit back and crack a beer and listen to the story of Liars Bench.
